The law comes amid a global push for tougher age restrictions on social media platforms. The government of Turkey on Saturday formally banned access to social media platform for children under the age of 15. The law was published today following the Turkish Parliament's adoption of the bill last April. The ban will come into force on Nov. 1. Social media platforms will have to "take the necessary technical and administrative measures, including age verification," to implement the new rules, the law states. The age verification system would work with a government-issued "token", according to the law's Article 7.

Although every service imaginable is or has been provided by the free market, governments at every level are united in their belief that there is one service that government at some level should provide, fund, regulate, control, and/or mandate that every child should receive: education. And it is not just government. Most Americans believe likewise, and have for over a hundred years. Even most of those who pay tuition to send their children to a private school undoubtedly still believe that government should have public schools and exercise some degree of control over education even if it takes place at a private school. Many federal government officials have sent their children to Sidwell Friends School — an elite private Quaker school in Washington, D.C. — including Presidents Clinton and Obama. Yet, none of those government officials who enrolled their children there ever called for the elimination of public schools.

New polling shows that K-12 education has now reached a record low in the number of people who are even “somewhat satisfied” with the state of education in the U.S. What is most troubling is that the near-total contempt for our school system does not make a bit of difference. Families and students have become largely irrelevant to an education cartel, a self-sustaining, self-perpetuating political alliance of unions and politicians.
